TOWN OF EDMONSTON, MARYLAND
Official Green Street Dedication & Ribbon Cutting Ceremony - November 9, 2010
On November 9, 2010, a crowd of 250 came to Edmonston to dedicate the greenest street on the East Coast, if not the nation. The program featured Edmonston resident Stephanie Duarte, 12, US Senator Ben Cardin, US Representative Donna Edwards, County Executive Rushern Baker, Councilwoman Andrea Harrison, State Senator Paul Pinsky and members of Edmonston's Green Team. Students from nearby Riverdale Elementary demonstrated responsible stormwater management by planting and watering the streetside raingardens. The program also included a crowd countdown to turn on the LED, windpowered streetlights.
Movingly, the program was opened and closed by Viola Plummer Hubbard and Rev. Jerome Fowler who provided song and prayer. They are descendants of the Plummer family, freed slaves from the Calvert's nearby Riversdale Plantation, who overcame tremendous adversity to become Edmonston's founding family in 1870.
